Relationships of the Ovular Surface with Follicle Cells and Origin of the Zona Pellucida in Rabbit Oocytes

چکیده
In mammals, immature oocytes are surrounded by a layer of flattened cells. At this early stage of development, these "follicle cells" and the plasma membrane of the oocyte are in close proximity. As the oocyte matures, the follicle cells multiply and become cuboidal or radially elongated, and a jelly-like substance containing polysaccharides (1) appears between the oocyte cortex and the follicle cells. When fully developed, this jelly will constitute the zona pellucida (ZP). Although separated by the zona pellucida, the bodies of the follicle cells and the mature oocyte maintain a close relationship throughout the life of the latter. Two cellular extensions effect this relationship: the multibranched prolongations of the follicle cells, and slender microvilli arising from the oocyte surface. Clearly, the zona pellucida contains both cellular extensions and amorphous substance. The present observations on rabbit follicles are intended to elucidate two problems that arise in considering the nature of these two components-the relationship between follicle and oocyte surface, and the origin of the amorphous substance. The material examined in this work was obtained from recently matured female rabbits and fixed in OsO4 dissolved in a solution of polyvinylpyrrolidone ("periston" Bayer), according to a method outlined in a previous communication (10). Cellular Extensions and the Relationship between Oocyte and Follicle Cells.--Many authors have interpreted the follicle cell prolongations as anastomotic bridges connecting the cytoplasms of follicle cell and oocyte (6, 8); others consider them to be extensions of the follicle cells that end at the oocyte surface, thereby forming a contact relationship only (2, 5, 7). Histologists seem to favor the second opinion, but Kemp's recent observations in the electron microscope (4) have caused new interest in the first concept. In a recent EM study of rat oocytes at various stages of growth, S0telo and Porter state that they could find no evidence of continuity between oocyte and follicle cell cytoplasms in their electron micrographs (9).

O-19: Fertilization Rates Are Improved after IVF if The Corona Radiata Is Left Intact in Vitrified-Warmed Human Oocytes
Background: Before human MII oocytes are vitrified they are usually denuded from their cumulus cells. In this study we wanted to investigate the effects of an intact corona radiata on the vitrification and fertilization of human oocytes. Materials and Methods: The study comprised two different parts. In Part 1, 36 MII stage oocytes, from 6 patients, were randomly assigned into a control group, ...
متن کاملGranulosa cell-germ cell relationship in the developing rabbit ovary.
Granulosa cells play an important part in the nutrition of the oocyte during oogenesis (Raven, 1961). Anderson & Beams (1960) suggested that, in the primary follicle, nutritive material synthesized by the granulosa cells reaches the oocyte by diffusion across the zona pellucida. In the rabbit, follicle formation and elaboration of the zona pellucida begin at the end of the second week after bir...
متن کاملO-11: Zona Pellucida Birefringence and Meiotic Spindle Visualization of Human Oocytes Are Not Influenced by In Vitro Maturation Technology
Background: In vitro maturation (IVM) is a promising treatment option for certain infertile women. Nowadays, with the aid of the Polscope, it has become possible to evaluate zona pellucida (ZP) and spindle as parameters of oocyte quality. The goal was to investigate the relationship between the presence of the meiotic spindle and ZP birefringence with morphology of the in vivo and in vitro matu...
متن کاملP-120: Meiotic Spindle Visualization and Zona Pellucida Birefringence in Relation to Morphology of In Vivo and In Vitro Matured Human Oocytes of In Vivo and In Vitro Matured Human Oocytesof In Vivo and In Vitro Matured Human Oocytes
Background: The meiotic spindle plays an important role in the oocyte during chromosome alignment and separation at meiosis. The zona pellucid (ZP) is a dynamic matrix composed of filaments with the properties that might reflect the history of oocyte cytoplasmic maturation. Since, spindle and ZP in living oocytes are highly birefringent, their structures can be viewed noninvasively by using a P...
متن کاملP-103: Polscope Analysis of Meiotic Spindle and Zona Pellucida Birefringence of Metaphase II Oocytes in Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Patients
Background Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOs) is one of the most common causes of infertility in women of reproductive age. Currently, one of the best therapeutic options for PCOs patients is ICSI. Moreover, IVM can be a useful technique for women with PCOs who are at the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). On the other hand, the oocyte quality can be a determining factor for outc...
